Tejas Verdes by Fermin Cabal - Gulbenkian Theatre, Canterbury - March 2007

Tejas Verdes deals with an inquisition into one who 'disappeared' in the infamous Pinochet regime in the 1960's. Five women give individual testimonies of their experiences during the Chilean coup. Each story is somehow connected to the protagonist, Colerina, an anti-Pinochet Marxist, captured and murdered in his remorseless prison, Tejas Verdes, where over 3,000 people were killed or 'disappeared'. I wanted to emphasise the harsh reality of Pinochet's regime and the honestly of the monologues by allowing the audience to see Tejas Verdes as a presentation of fact and not illusionistic theatre. I created a harsh, threatening and timeless atmosphere by erecting a mass of 6ft tall protest placards to remember the dead.
